The new W480 is a compact search and rescue locating device, designed for the personal safety of crew members or any professional working at sea. Using the clips provided, it can be mounted on self-inflatable lifejackets, and also fixed directly to the oral inflation tube.
Should the wearer fall overboard, the W480 starts working automatically thanks to the sea-sensors situated on the rear of the device and transmits a radio signal that can be used to locate the crew member.
The W480 is fitted with an activation / deactivation knob and a safety lock to avoid the device being accidentally activated. The device is also equipped with a high-performance light signal (LED) to aid the localization of the crew member during conditions of poor visibility, as well as a large Test or Manual Activation pushbutton.
To ensure the device is working properly and to check the battery level, the user needs to ensure that the activation knob is in the OFF position before pressing the Test button. Out at sea and with the activation knob in the ARMED position, the user can press the push button to send out the alarm signal in the moment he falls overboard.
W480 simultaneously emits a number of SAR signals including an AIS message (AIS MOB on channels AIS 1 & 2) and a DSC message (Ch 70). This MOB is AMRD Group A compliance.
The emission of several signals increases the chances for people in distress to be located by the SAR rescue units who receive the signals.
A sophisticated integrated GPS receiver provides the location of the crew member.
The batteries supplied with the device (three LiMnO₂ 3-volt batteries) have a guaranteed life of 5 years (in normal weather conditions) and can be replaced directly by the user.
The W480 is an extremely easy to use device and thanks to the ergonomic design and the shape of its controls, can be easily activated, even if the user is wearing gloves and / or protective gear, such as on the offshore platform.
The W480 is also available in ATEX version (W480 EX).
